Vanilla: World Scenario
Vanilla is commercially known in Madagascar, Indonesia, Mexico, China, India, Comoro Islands, Reunion (known previously as Bourbon), Tonga, French Polynesia and many African nations including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, Fiji Islands and Turkey. Vanilla is subjected to competition from many low cost substitutes which are artificially synthesized.
Vanilla in India:
In India, vanilla cultivation is popular in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil nadu since early 1990s. The area under cultivation at present is about 1,800 hectares with a production of about 120 metric tonnes. In Karnataka, vanilla is cultivated in about 1,305 hectares in Chickmagalur, Shimoga, Hassan ,Mysore, Bangalore, Dakshina Kannada, Uttar Kannada and Kodagu districts.
